Chilean emergency teams found this Monday (4) the bodies of three Argentinians lost while climbing a mountain near the border between Chile and Argentina.

The group lost contact on November 28 while climbing Marmolejo Mountain in the Andes near the town of San José de Maipo, 60 km from Santiago.

The victims are the mayor of General San Martín (La Pampa Province), Raúl Espir; Sergio Daniel Berardo, an employee from the same city; and Ignacio Lucero, a guide.

“Special Police Operations Group agents have found the bodies of three missing mountaineers,” Chilean police reported on the social network X, formerly Twitter.

On November 25, a group of six Argentines climbed the mountain, but three days later only three of them returned. The others decided to stay in the mountain range.

After contact with the group was lost, a private helicopter was used to inspect the camp at an altitude of around 4,800 m, but only found the missing people’s tent.

On December 2nd, the returned mountaineers filed a missing person’s report with the Chilean police, who found the bodies on Monday at an altitude of 5,600 m.

Temperatures below 10 ° C and strong winds made the search for the missing more difficult and hampered the recovery of the bodies, which, according to authorities, should not be recovered until Wednesday (6).

“There will be a forecast tomorrow [terçafeira (5)] Snow on the mountain range […] On Wednesday, a meteorological window will be open to lower the bodies,” explained Miguel Muñoz, regional director of the National Civil Protection and Civil Protection Service.
