A man from Sherbrooke, in the Eastern Townships, was arrested Thursday afternoon after breaking into the home of an elderly couple, apparently armed with a knife, during the night.
Around midnight Wednesday night, an elderly lady on Victoria Street reportedly contacted the Sherbrooke Police Service (SPS) after a 44-year-old man broke into her home.
Armed with a knife, he is said to have tried to attack the woman and her spouse. However, the latter, 80, managed to “confront the suspect” and “hit him with a nearby object” before taking refuge in the basement with his wife, the SPS said in a statement.
Numerous searches were carried out during the night to locate the suspect, who was eventually arrested outside his home around noon on Thursday.
The forties would indeed be well known to the police. He was formally charged with burglary and trespassing, assault, assault and carrying a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He is expected to appear on Friday during the day.
