“Arms and ammunition to Russia”. Diplomatic tensions between South Africa and the USA

The war in Ukraine affects the whole world. The South African government has indeed summoned US Ambassador Reuben Brigety to express disappointment after allegations that the country allowed arms sales to Russia in late 2022. South Africa’s foreign ministry understands the reports agree with the US “warmly” and “strongly” but wants to raise the issue with the ambassador. There will also be an interview between Naledi Pandor, South Africa’s Minister for International Relations and Cooperation, and Antony Blinken, US Secretary of State.

In recent days, Brigety had spoken of a Russian ship that docked at a naval base in Cape Town last December. “We are convinced that before his return to Russia he loaded arms and ammunition,” the ambassador accused. South Africa Ministry spokesman Clayson Monyela stressed that the commission overseeing the sale and supply of arms had “no data” on shipments to Russia. “When a crime has been committed, the law will take its course,” Monyela wrote on her Twitter account. South African President Cyril Rampahosa condemned Brigety’s “disappointing” comments, while the African National Congress (ANC) party called them “imprudent” and “regrettable”.
