Riyadh and Washington earlier welcomed “prenegotiation talks” between the army and the RSF, urging them to actively engage after numerous broken ceasefire agreements. But both sides made it clear that they would only negotiate a humanitarian ceasefire, not an end to the war.

RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, confirmed his group’s presence and said he hoped the talks would achieve the desired goal, which was safe passage for civilians.

Sudanese forces said they sent a delegation to the Red Sea city late Friday, but special envoy Dafallah Alhaj said the army would not sit directly with a delegation that the “rebel” group RSF could send.

Meanwhile, Hemedti has vowed to capture or kill army leader Abdel Fattah alBurhan, and there is also evidence that both sides remain reluctant to make concessions to end the bloodshed.
