  • It is said to have happened at a daycare run by his wife on a base in Missouri

A US Army sergeant has been accused of killing a two-year-old girl at a military base in Missouri.

Sergeant. Kevin Long, 40, is accused of killing the child in 2019 while he and his wife were caring for her while they ran a daycare center at their home on Fort Leonard Wood base.

In addition to first-degree murder, Long was also accused of lying to federal authorities during a homicide investigation by claiming he was unaware of Army regulations prohibiting the operation of a daycare center on the base.

The federal indictment was unsealed and released Friday following Long’s June 29 arrest and subsequent court appearance.

He remains in federal custody pending a July 6 custody hearing, according to a press release from the US Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Missouri.

The indictment alleges that Long killed the girl through “blunt force” on November 6, 2019.

It also said the abuse was “part of a pattern and practice of assault” against the girl.

Fort Leonard Wood is a US Army training base in the Missouri Ozarks. According to Military Installations, it houses approximately 5,400 active duty military personnel and more than 12,000 family members.

Because this is a United States jurisdiction, the case will be heard in federal court.

Under federal law, any murder committed in the commission of child molestation is considered first-degree murder.

Long is being represented by Assistant Federal Defense Attorney Brian D. Risley and could face the death penalty or life in prison if found guilty of murder.
