The long-term unemployed Arno Dübel, who became known through television, has died. The man, often referred to as “Germany’s most famous unemployed person”, died at Hamburg University Hospital after a long illness at the age of 67, reports the Hamburger Morgenpost (Mopo) late on Tuesday. Before that, he lived in a retirement home in Rahlstedt.
After a year-long break from broadcasting, Dübel announced last year that he would finally start work. According to media reports, he wanted to be a TV star. A “manager” appeared who allegedly bought all the rights to the “Arno Dübel brand”. But his promise to help Dübel with his acting career had no noticeable effect.
Arno Dübel, born on January 13, 1956 in Bornum, is a controversial figure. He became known for his life of 46 years without gainful employment, and therefore as the German citizen who lived the longest at the expense of the state.
