Authorities this Friday in Guanajuato arrested suspected femicide Milagros Montserrat Meza, the 40-year-old woman who was stabbed to death in León last Thursday. The mayor of the capital, Guanajuato, Alejandro Navarro, confirmed the news through his social networks: “After an operation with the Minister of Citizen Security and in coordination with the Guanajuato Prosecutor’s Office, we managed to conquer Noria Alta.” [al suroeste de la localidad] to Miguel the Miracle Killer”.
The harsh images of the events outraged a country used to violence and insecurity. They showed Meza bleeding to death in broad daylight on a street in León, some 50 kilometers from where authorities arrested Miguel. The events happened at 6:30 a.m. Meza, 40, was on her way to work when a bare-faced man followed her and stabbed her multiple times without explanation. She screamed and he ran out of the house. Due to this “direct attack”, the authorities initially ruled out that the crime was in fact a robbery.

Paramedics arrived at the scene half an hour later, but Meza was already dead. The suspect’s arrest was completed just over a day later after the Leon’s Secretariat of Security and Guanajuato State Governor Diego Sinhue asked citizens for cooperation to find him. “We are all outraged. There are no words to describe the feeling. The search does not stop and will continue until he is captured. If you know where it is or have data that would help us stop it faster, it’s time to speak up,” the agency wrote on Twitter.
The femicide of Milagros Montserrat Meza is the latest media example of violence in Mexico, where ten women are murdered every day. So far, more than 15,000 murders have been registered in Mexico in 2023, compared to 32,000 last year, according to government figures.
Meza’s case reached El Salvador’s controversial president, Nayib Bukele, who has had a powerful hand in reducing levels of violence in the country by declaring a state of emergency. And he wrote about the murder: “The ‘human rights’ NGOs say nothing, they don’t care about the death of honest people. They would only defend the killer if the state does its job and gets him off the streets. There they will go out and ask for good treatment and “reintegration” of this disgusting rat.”
López Obrador indicated this Friday at the National Palace that he does not want to “quarrel” with Bukele because the Mexican reality and that of El Salvador are “different”. “I think the root causes need to be addressed. It’s not just about the use of coercive measures. Lasting peace is achieved through justice and that is what we are putting into action,” he said during the morning conference.
