According to English-language media, citing two national security sources, in February 2021 the Ontario elected official who is at the center of allegations related to Chinese interference would have recommended that the Chinese consul in Toronto retain the two captured Canadians citizens no more.

He would have done so because a quicker release would have benefited the conservative opposition. At that point, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor had been in detention for more than two years.
