Artificial intelligence and social media: opportunities and risks Austrian Parliament

The changes brought about by the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) for media and journalism were the focus of the Parliamentary Forum held at the Chamber. The invited experts agreed that it was about using AI in the best way possible and minimizing risks.

According to Charlie Beckett of the London School of Economics and Political Science, most media companies are already “experimenting” with generative AI programs, which will lead to massive increases in the efficiency of journalistic work. However, AI programs cannot replace the human component; on the contrary, it will become even more important in the future. In his presentation, Uli Köppen from Bayerischer Rundfunk provided an insight into how AI tools are already being used in the daily work of a newsroom. According to the expert, it is not too late to create your own European linguistic models. For Clemens Pig, General Director of the Austrian Press Agency, the specific use of generative AI should neither be demonized nor glorified. Social media companies must not miss the “opportunity of the century” presented by the technological revolution.
