the fighter Chun Li became one of the most recognizable characters in the fighting game “Street Fighter”. She first appeared in Street Fighter II as an Interpol officer specializing in martial arts.
Li embarks on a journey to avenge his father’s death at the hands of M. Bison. The character was designed by Akira “Akiman” Yasuda and wore baggy, baggy pants. Yasuda decided to change that to make her look more striking.
It was then that he created the design that everyone knows today, showing ChunLi with bare legs and a tight dress. This was important in composing the personality of the fighter, who performs multiple punches and special combinations primarily with her muscular legs.
In Mandarin, her name means “spring beauty” (春 chūn, “spring”; 麗 lì, “beautiful”). In the west it is common to pronounce “chuhnlee”.
