The character PicaPau became known on the small screen for causing constant confusion. The history of its origin shows why Walter Lantz had the idea for the design.
As published by Wikipedia, Lantz and his wife were on their honeymoon in 1940 when a bird of the same species tormented them all night.
Initially, Universal Studios did not accept the first sketch of the “Mad Woodpecker” that Walter presented to the studio. Despite this, he insisted they give the character a chance as he was sure it would be a hit.
At that time, the studio responded to his request and produced the animation, which was really successful and won new seasons. Lantz has made several changes to the bird’s appearance over the years to make it “friendlier”.
His first version was deemed “clumsy and ugly” by the studio’s president, Bernie Kreisler. But audiences loved the idea of watching a bird cause trouble for other characters throughout episodes.
