Asbury Park, NJ — A wave of new electric vehicle charging stations is coming across the country as interest in gasoline car alternatives grows and could be further increased by the global rise in gasoline prices.
Most plans were underway before the already high gas prices soared due to the war in Ukraine, but timing may favor electric car makers and other fossil fuel abandoners.
From coast to coast, cities of all sizes are adding charging stations for electric vehicles. Despite high prices and limited availability, strong demand for vehicles is expected. This means that more communities are feeling the pressure to add charging stations, and the driver is at risk of passing the car in favor of the right place for the plug-in.
Publicly funded investments are being made because most gasoline prices in the country are above $ 4 per gallon and are significantly higher in some regions.
On Monday, New Jersey authorities awarded $ 1 million in grants to install electric vehicle charging stations in 24 tourist destinations in the state. The idea was to help promote tourism by allowing visitors who own electric cars to come to New Jersey’s vacation spots and reassure them that they will not run out of electricity to get home.
“Don’t worry about it,” said Joseph Fiordariso, chairman of the New Jersey Public Utility Commission. “We have the equipment here, so you don’t have to worry about the range.”
Spots to make money with the new charging station include Asbury Park, Atlantic City, Ocean City, and several state parks and forests.
The money comes from the state budget. On Tuesday, state public transport NJ Transit will announce a charging station at a bus stop in Camden, a suburb of Philadelphia.
Currently, there are about 625 vehicle charging stations in New Jersey
On the federal side, Hoboken, just outside New York City, has acquired up to six new charging stations in a deal announced Monday. US Senator Robert Menendez said funding from the federal spending bill “will help facilitate the transition to electric vehicles, reduce emissions and create a cleaner environment for children.” Stated.
Governments across the country are doing the same. Bellingham, Washington plans to add 90 charging stations over the next two years. Portland, Maine recently signed a 10-year contract with a company that installs, operates and maintains more than 40 electric vehicle charging stations on public land.
Charleston, West Virginia has added two charging stations to the public parking lot. Charlotte, North Carolina, Cleveland, and Saginaw, Michigan are one of the cities that are adding charging stations.
It’s happening in other countries as well. Glasgow, Scotland, is adding 164 new stations this year.
According to the Kelley Blue Book, about 500,000 electric vehicles were sold in the United States last year.
