At 22, his e-cigarette habit cost him both lungs –

A 22-year-old American man underwent a double lung transplant after complications arose from his daily e-cigarette practice.

Jackson Allard of North Dakota visited a clinic in October with abdominal pain. Doctors then detected worrying oxygen levels that required immediate hospitalization. He was urgently treated for severe flu and double pneumonia.

According to doctors, his smoking habits, which his family viewed as excessive, were responsible for the critical condition of his lungs, as the New York Post reported on Sunday. Mr. Allard's grandmother said in an interview with ValleyNews Live that a doctor estimated his chance of survival at 1%.

During an interview with TVA as part of Tobacco-Free Quebec Week, pharmacist and professor Diane Lamarre informed the public about the harmful substances contained in e-cigarettes: “Propylene glycol, glycerin, metals, nickel, tin, aluminum.” She pointed out that that our lungs are not designed to absorb such substances.

Fortunately, after three months of waiting in the hospital, the young man was able to benefit from a transplant of two new lungs. Although he narrowly escaped death, this procedure radically changed his life. He will never be able to smoke or drink alcohol again and will likely need a second lung transplant in the future, according to doctors.
