(ANSA) BRASILIA, MARCH 22 At least 230 journalists and media outlets fell victim to attacks in Brazil in 2021, as the country fell to 111th in the world for freedom of expression.
According to a report by the Brazilian Association of Radio and Television Stations (Abert), the main aggressors against the journalists were officials and politicians.
The Violence and Freedom of Expression Report finds that aggression and intimidation by communications professionals increased by 21% in 2021 compared to 2020.
“The Brazilian scenario is worrying once again,” commented Abert boss Flavio Lara Resende.
Lara Resende mentioned that in 2021 Brazil fell to 111th place in the world press freedom rankings compiled by the NGO Reporters Without Borders.
Brazil dropped four positions from the 2020 list and entered the board’s “red zone.
“In Brazil we had a shameful fact, for the first time in 20 years the country entered the red zone of the world rankings, it was the fourth consecutive year of relegation,” noted Lara Resende. (ANSA).
