At least 25 people died on Saturday when a bus carrying 60 passengers fell over a cliff in northwestern Peru, police said.

The bus, owned by the company Qorianka Tours, was traveling from Lima to Tumbes on the border with Ecuador when it went off the road near the town of Organos for unknown reasons, police said.

Police said an unknown number of injured passengers were taken to hospitals in El Alto and Mancora, popular resort towns about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) north of Lima.

Several passengers were thrown from the bus while others were trapped inside.

Traffic accidents are common on Peru’s roads. CBS News reported that more than 2,600 people were killed in such incidents in 2016. In 2018, at least 30 people were killed when a bus plunged down a cliff onto a rocky beach along a narrow stretch of freeway known as the “Devil’s Curve” on Tuesday. This was announced by the Peruvian police and fire department. The highway was then closed to bus traffic by the government.

Peru has been rocked by protests demanding the ouster of President Dina Boluarte and the return to power of her predecessor, whose ouster in December sparked deadly unrest and plunged the nation into political chaos.
