At least 41 people have died in a riot at a women’s prison in Honduras

At least 41 women were killed in a Honduran clash between gang members in a women’s prison, but the number is preliminary and could rise, according to a local police spokesman. At least five injured prisoners who were taken to a hospital in the state capital were also recorded. The case happened last Tuesday (20).

The Honduran authorities are commenting on the incident

Honduran Deputy Security Minister Julissa Villanueva stated that the situation at the Women’s Social Adjustment Center was an emergency, stating:

“We will not tolerate vandalism or irregularities in this prison. Immediate intervention is approved, accompanied by the fire brigade, police and military, a state of emergency is declared.”

Villanueva also announced a plan to control the country’s 26 prisons, which house about 20,000 inmates.

Delma Ordóñez, president of an association of prisoners’ relatives, reported that the prison module was completely destroyed and burned down and that the victims were members of Mara Salvatrucha, raising the suspicion that the attack was by members of the rival barrio gang had been committed. 18 .
