SERBIA – A rare mass shooting in Europe. Eight children and a security guard were killed in a shootout at a school in Belgrade this Wednesday, May 3, Serbian Interior Minister said. “Six children and a teacher were injured and are currently being treated by the emergency department,” authorities said.
The suspect is a former student of this school in the Vracar district in central Belgrade, the ministry said. At the age of 14 he was “found in the schoolyard and arrested”. The 5th grade student fired “his father’s gun” around 8:40 a.m., according to the Interior Ministry.
The teenager had a detailed plan for the killing and “planned filming for a month, he made a list of children he wanted to kill,” Veselin Milic, the city’s police chief, told a news conference in the Serbian capital.
“All police forces […] We are working hard to clarify all the facts and circumstances that led to this tragedy,” the Interior Ministry said.
At the end of the morning, the mayor of the municipality of Vracar, Milan Nedeljkovic, told the press that the establishment guard “wanted to prevent this tragedy”. “The tragedy would probably have been worse if this man had not stood in front of the boy who shot,” added Milan Nedeljkovic in front of the school, according to state television (RTS) images.
The incident caused a great shock in this Balkan country where school shootings are extremely rare.
