A bridge has partially collapsed in western Greece. There are said to be at least one dead and several wounded. Construction works took place on the bridge because it was considered at risk of collapse.
At least one person was killed when a bridge collapsed near the Greek port of Patras, according to firefighters. Eight people were injured.
“We are still looking for other people who may be under the rubble,” a member of the rescue team at the scene told television.
Bridge was apparently found to be unstable
The bridge is on the route connecting the port of Patras with the capital Athens.
The president of the seismic protection organization OASP, Efthymios Lekkas, told the ERT television station that there are problems with the stability of the bridge, which the authorities are aware of.
At the time of the accident, there were two heavy pieces of equipment on the bridge, including a large crane, as shown in the photos. How the collapse happened was initially unclear.
