A tank truck rollover started a massive fire on Interstate 95 at the Gold Star Memorial Bridge, killing one.
Emergency services are working to put out the Groton, Connecticut, fire after the vehicle overturned Friday morning.
New London Mayor Michael Passero confirmed that the tanker’s driver was killed in the incident.
It is unclear whether the person killed was the driver of the tanker or the cause of the accident.
Dramatic footage showed plumes of smoke billowing from the bridge as the fire continues to burn.
It crosses the River Thames and is just a few thousand feet from the mouth of the Atlantic Ocean.
The Department of Transportation has closed the road between exits 86 and 84, with the south side of the bridge closed for structural inspections.

Sergeant Joseph Pelchat, New London Police Department, said: “Due to a serious car accident on the Gold Star Bridge, both lanes of I-95 are closed and the bridge is closed to traffic. Expect possible major delays.’
Connecticut State Police also confirmed buildings were on fire under the bridge, with injuries reported, although it is unclear how serious they are.
