At least six injured in suspected knife attack at Paris Central Station

CNN —

At least six people were injured in a suspected knife attack at Paris’ Gare du Nord train station early Wednesday, French authorities said.

A spokeswoman for the Paris police told CNN a person started attacking people with a knife at 6:45 a.m. local time.

Several police officers opened fire, including a security agent from rail operator SNCF, police said. Several shots were fired, the alleged attacker was injured.

A spokesman for the Paris prosecutor said six people were injured, one of whom is in critical condition. The suspect is also in critical condition, the spokesman said.

Home Secretary Gerald Darmanin arrived at the Gare du Nord shortly after Wednesday morning’s attack.

He previously wrote on Twitter that the alleged attacker injured several people before being “quickly neutralized.”

“Gratitude to the police for their effective and courageous response,” Darmanin tweeted.

The French rail operator SNCF reported traffic disruptions in the departure and arrival areas of the station after the alleged attack.

“Police appear to have opened fire on a dangerous individual who injured travelers at the Gare du Nord,” she tweeted.

A security perimeter has been put in place, but the station continues to function normally, SNCF added.
