At least three killed in a train crash in Upper Bavaria

At least three people died in a train crash near Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the Austrian border. A spokesperson for the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district office said this afternoon that a total of 60 people with injuries were being treated, 16 of them with serious injuries.

The regional train was on its way to Munich around noon. It cannot be ruled out that many students were on the train at the beginning of the holidays. The train likely derailed, according to a spokesperson for the Federal Police – why is unclear.

Three wagons overturned. “People are being pulled through the windows,” said the Federal Police spokesman. The accident happened around 12:15 pm in the Burgrain district of Loisachauen. “All age groups” were among the injured.

Fire brigade, emergency doctors and police were at the scene with a large contingent. “A full alarm was raised to the fire brigade and rescue service,” said a spokesperson for the integrated control center in Oberland. According to an ADAC air rescue spokesperson, six rescue helicopters were in action, three of them from ADAC.

First lightly wounded is rescued

The spokesman for the police headquarters in Upper Bavaria South, Stefan Sonntag, said that calls had been received from people reporting that a train had derailed. The first slightly wounded were recovered. They would be collected in a nearby building. Relatives are there too. The newspaper “Bild” reported first.

Deutsche Bahn (DB) closed the route between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Oberau. Munich trains turn early in Oberau. From the direction of Mittenwald, trains turn early in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Replacement traffic is being planned, it said on Twitter.
