Athens: No State Funeral for Former King Constantine II

The former king of Greece, Constantine II, who died yesterday, will be buried as a private person. The government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis decided that today. The funeral will take place at his family’s summer palace, “where his ancestors are buried,” the Greek prime minister’s office said in a statement. The summer palace of Tatoi is located about 25 kilometers north of Athens.

Greek media had previously reported that Konstantin’s family was awaiting a state funeral. In Greece, funerals with full military honors are customary for former heads of state. Constantine II was the country’s last king. Ten years after he ascended the throne in 1964, the monarchy in Greece was abolished by referendum.

It is not yet clear where the funeral will be held. “The family’s wish is for it to take place in the cathedral of Athens,” a spokeswoman for the dpa’s former royal family said on Wednesday. Representatives of almost all of Europe’s royal families are expected in Athens, she added.
