AT&T Closes Flagship Store in Downtown San Francisco

AT&T will close its flagship store in downtown San Francisco, a company spokesman confirmed.

The 1 Powell St. store will close on Aug. 1, AT&T spokesman Chris Collins told SFGATE.

“Consumer shopping habits are constantly changing, and we are changing with them. That means serving customers where they are through the right mix of retail stores, digital channels and our phone support team,” Collins said in an emailed statement.

The closure leaves 11 AT&T stores in San Francisco, including one nearby on Market Street and Fremont Street. All employees affected by the closure would be offered jobs at various locations across the city, Collins said.

AT&T isn’t the only telecom giant making similar moves from downtown: Last month, T-Mobile closed its Union Square flagship store. Since then, the area has seen even more closures: Cinemark closed its downtown San Francisco theater after it was announced that Westfield would be giving up the massive San Francisco Center on Market Street where the theater is located.

The historic eight-story building at 1 Powell St. was constructed in 1921 after the 1906 earthquake to replace the headquarters of Bank of America, then Bank of Italy. It is directly behind the Powell Street BART station, making it a convenient location for retail outlets.

“We’re proud of our continued presence in the community, not only through our retail stores, but also through our local investments in world-class connectivity with our 5G and fiber networks,” said Collins.
