The radical armed group Hamas released this Saturday (January 20) an official statement assessing the attack of October 7, 2023 against Israel, an action that exacerbated conflicts in the Gaza Strip region. The message was the first position of the offensive, which killed 1,200 people in Israeli territory.

In the document, the extremist group argued that the attack was “a necessary act and a normal response to all Israeli conspiracies against the Palestinian people.”

“There may have been some errors in the implementation of Operation Storm AlAqsa due to the rapid collapse of Israel's military and security system and the chaos along the border areas with Gaza,” Hamas wrote in the statement published by the newspaper British The Guardian.

That day, Hamas members also kidnapped 240 hostages. CNN estimates there are 132 in captivity, of which 107 are alive.

The October attack prompted Israel to begin bombing Gaza for several weeks in a row. The Hamas Ministry of Health estimates the number of dead at more than 25,000 Palestinians most of whom are women and under 18 years old.
