Donald Trump “failed his duty”. The former President of the United States must therefore be held responsible for the attack on the Capitol, said Thursday, July 22, during a prime-time hearing, elected officials who have been investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 attack for a year. The Republican-elect “opened the floodgates to disorder and corruption,” said Bennie Thompson, chairman of the House Committee on the investigation. All those responsible, including those in the White House, would therefore have to “account for their actions in court”.
Commissioners concluded a series of high-profile hearings on Thursday by dedicating 2.5 hours to January 6, 2021 as experienced “minute by minute” by Donald Trump. They accused him of having followed the wave of violence from his supporters for three hours without reacting, in “violation of his duty as commander-in-chief”.
This audition was the eighth in six weeks and the second prime time broadcast. The previous ones have focused, among other things, on the role played by the far right in the attack or the pressure Donald Trump put on election agents. New auditions will be held in September, Bennie Thompson explained. A final report is expected in autumn.
