The security forces in Austria, Germany and Spain have indications that an Islamist terrorist cell could be planning several attacks in Europe on New Year's Eve or Christmas. The group may be linked to the Islamic State organization in Khorasan province, DPA has learned. Destinations could include Christmas services in Cologne, Vienna and Madrid. A major operation has been underway at Cologne Cathedral since this evening. According to Bild information, the first arrests were made by special forces in Vienna and Germany today.

Armored Cologne Cathedral

After the alarm about the risk of attacks in Germany, Cologne Cathedral will be searched this evening and checked with explosives dogs: The police want to ensure that no dangerous items have been stored in the cathedral, reports Bild. “The Cologne police will take special protective measures starting this evening,” said a spokesman, explaining that no information about the investigation would be provided for security reasons. After the searches, the cathedral will be closed and tomorrow all visitors will be screened before entering the church.
