Israeli forces were placed on “high alert” on Saturday after two attacks took place in less than 24 hours. A 21-year-old Palestinian man shot at passers-by near a synagogue in the Neve Yaakov neighborhood of East Jerusalem on Friday, killing seven before being shot dead. On Saturday morning, a 13-year-old Palestinian shot and wounded two Israelis in Silwan, a stone’s throw from the Old City walls. Neither of these two attacks was alleged.
This new violence comes amid a sudden escalation after the deaths of nine Palestinians, including militants and a woman in her 60s, on Thursday in an Israeli army raid in Jenin in the West Bank, Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967 is. The army has announced it will increase its workforce in the West Bank as calls for restraint from abroad have multiplied.

“It’s no longer negotiable. Two days ahead of a new day of national mobilization against pension reform, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne has chosen to ignore those calling for an end to moving the retirement age from 62 to 64. “It’s no longer negotiable, retirement at 64 and speeding up [de l’allongement de la durée de cotisation] of the Touraine reform,” the Prime Minister explained to Franceinfo on Sunday, on the eve of the start of consideration of the project in the Assembly committee.
The Prime Minister, on the other hand, was open to a discussion in Parliament about making better use of the notions of ‘education’ and ‘motherhood’ that women have acquired throughout their careers. MEPs will take up the hard-fought pension reform project in committee on Monday for a dry run with 7,000 amendments under the eyes of opponents who are organizing a powerful moment of mobilization on the streets on Tuesday after January 19.

Delegates at the Socialist Congress in Marseille confirmed on Saturday Olivier Faure’s victory as First Secretary of the PS thanks to an agreement with his rival Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol that ends several days of disputes and internal rifts.
On the second day of the congress, the 186 delegates almost unanimously confirmed the agreement between the two competitors, particularly as regards the composition of the management board. According to this “collective governance pact”, Olivier Faure is confirmed as First Secretary, while his opponent Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, who challenged the outcome of the internal vote, becomes First Delegated Secretary, as does Johanna Rolland, Mayor of Nantes and Mr Faure’s ally . Hélène Geoffroy, leader of the anti-New People’s, Ecological and Social Union (Nupes), has been forced to chair the National Council, the party’s parliament.

Death of Tire Nichols: The Memphis Police Department involved in his violent arrest has been disbanded
The Memphis Police Department announced on Saturday the disbanding of the special unit involved in the fatal blow to a young African American man in early January. This announcement came the day after the public release of videos showing the violent arrest of Tire Nichols on January 7 during a traffic stop. The man died three days after being admitted to the hospital. The images of the police operation caused horror and incomprehension in the United States without initially triggering the social explosion similar to that of summer 2020 after the death of George Floyd, killed by a white police officer.
Since his death in early January, Tire Nichols’ family has repeatedly called for calm. Rallies of a few dozen to a few hundred people were held in several cities including Memphis, New York and Washington on Friday night. The five police officers involved in the death of Tire Nichols have been fired, charged with murder and imprisoned. Four of them were released on bail.
