In Poland, the Auschwitz Memorial has slammed the fact that visitors outside the camp, where more than a million people died, took inappropriate photos. “Respect her memory,” site officials said.
A clear lack of respect. After a photo posted on social networks, the Auschwitz Memorial (Poland) wanted to remind people how important it is to behave properly in this highly symbolic place.
“Today I had one of the most difficult experiences of my life. Unfortunately, not everyone seems to have found it so moving,” lamented the British journalist who shared the scene.
A glamorous pose at the entrance to the camp, tightrope walkers on the rails that brought the prisoners there… The disrespectful behavior of some visitors was again denounced on social networks, causing outrage among many netizens.
The Auschwitz Memorial had to remind visitors not to take such pictures: “Coming (…) visitors should consider that they are entering the authentic site of the former camp where more than a million people were murdered. Respect her memory.”
As a reminder, the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp was the largest in the Third Reich. It served as a place of concentration, forced labor and extermination. It has become one of the symbols of the Holocaust and Nazi barbarism. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
