The challenge was perhaps too great on Tuesday for Canada's Rebecca Marino, who lost in the first round of the Australian Open to American Jessica Pegula, one of the best players in the world.
Marino, who qualified for the main draw, lost to the tournament's fifth seed in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.

Known for her powerful serve, Marino hit five aces but committed four double faults during the clash.
The Canadian was able to break her opponent's serve once. However, she allowed Pegula five opportunities to do the same and the American took advantage of four opportunities.
In the next round, Pegula will cross swords with the Frenchwoman Clara Burel.
In the qualifying phase, Marino clearly defeated her compatriot Katherine Sebov and was eliminated in the first round 2-0.
