Austria’s Chancellor supports Brazil’s peace initiative for Ukraine; Moscow praises

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer

247 Austrian Foreign Minister Karl Nehammer’s remark in support of the Brazilian peace initiative in Ukraine is a positive sign and shows understanding for the need for an agreement, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday (20).

On Tuesday, Nehammer expressed his support for the peace initiative in Ukraine put forward by Brazil. Also on Tuesday, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met with Nehammer in Brussels, Belgium.

“That is a positive sign. It indicates that the Austrians are gradually coming to terms with the need for a peaceful solution to the Ukraine crisis based on more realistic plans,” Zakharova said at a press conference.

In April, Lula said the United States and Europe should start talking about a peace deal in Ukraine and not encourage conflict. He called on countries not involved in the conflict to take responsibility for advancing the peace talks and to offer Russia “minimum terms” for ending the conflict. In addition, Lula suggested creating a G20like format to discuss the situation in Ukraine. (With information from Sputnik).
