Autumn Storm: Torrential rains over Quebec over the weekend

Storm Nicole has wreaked havoc in Florida, but its remnants will not spare Quebec, which will be battered by very strong winds and significant amounts of rain over the weekend.

Montreal, Montérégie and much of southeast Quebec’s sectors, such as Estrie and Beauce, are expected to experience 40 to 60 millimeters of rain starting Friday night, with temperatures above normal for the season that can cause flooding.

If the southwest is theoretically spared by the storm, the northern sectors such as Abitibi and Lac-Saint-Jean will be hit by an ice episode with ice accumulations 15 to 25 millimeters thick in places on Friday morning.

Intermittent rain is expected over the weekend for several sectors in the center of the province, particularly Capitale-Nationale, Mauricie and Saguenay, which are unaffected by Environment Canada’s warning.

However, the federal agency has issued a special weather report for the province’s eastern sectors, specifically the Bas-Saint-Laurent, Gaspésie and Îles-de-la-Madeleine sectors, which will be particularly wet with seasonal temperatures.

So the fall storm will bring up to 50 millimeters of rain on Friday night and Saturday, but the precipitation could turn to wet snow the next day to offer a beautiful, lower-mercury winter landscape.
