The English nurse who will end her life behind bars for killing seven babies and trying to take the lives of six others may have caused more casualties, according to one of the experts in her trial.
“I discovered several very suspicious cases where an endotracheal tube – inserted into a baby’s throat when they needed breathing support – had become dislodged and came out. “These tubes can come out accidentally, but seeing so many is very, very unusual,” Dr. Dewi Evans, a National Crime Agency accredited expert, said on Saturday in a podcast reported by The Telegraph.
Speaking on the Chron podcast on the trial of British nurse Lucy Letby, 33, the expert said he had looked at 32 cases and that, in addition to those mentioned in the trial, he believed seven others required further investigation.
“These babies suffered from life-threatening illnesses and three of them died – but we need to examine them to see if they were also in danger,” he was quoted as saying, according to British media. Their health was poor, so it may be impossible to prove beyond doubt whether they were harmed.”
In addition, the accredited expert added that the serial killer, sentenced to end her life behind bars with no possibility of release, could have injured about ten more babies by moving her breathing tubes.
“I suspect that these tubes were moved intentionally,” said Dr. Evans from The Telegraph quoted.
On Friday, Lucy Letby filed an application to appeal her conviction.
