It all starts with a bad sexist joke by Cédric (Patrick Hivon) after a boxing match he was attending with his friends. Pumped up by that testosterone rush, Cédric kissed a sportswriter on the cheek during a live TV broadcast and snapped, “I love you, Chantal!” felt good. This stolen kiss quickly went viral on social media, forcing the young father’s employer to suspend him.

On the advice of his well-meaning brother (Steve Laplante), who accuses him of always being misogynistic, Cédric will go into therapy by beginning to write an apology book aimed at women. Meanwhile, his girlfriend (Monia Chokri), who is in the midst of postpartum depression, is seduced by strange games initiated by her bright and mysterious new “babysitter” (Nadia Tereszkiewicz).

dream story

Babysitter is an adaptation of Catherine Léger’s play of the same name, performed at the Théâtre La Licorne in 2017. Monia Chokri fully appropriated the screenplay, also written by Catherine Léger, to draw an intriguing cinematic UFO endowed with joyful humor and an ultra-smooth visual aesthetic.

Exploring such sensitive issues as misogyny and domination in a playful and uninhibited way, the filmmaker offers a funny and intelligent look at our society in this post-#MeToo era. And it does so by transporting the viewer into a dreamlike fairytale world that borrows from the codes of 1970s horror and erotic cinema, making a statement that is as disturbing as it is seductive.
