- Another storm is imminent on the Italian island of Ischia.
- Many people would have left their homes.
- Although the danger level is yellow, precipitation can trigger landslides again.
Due to a new severe weather warning, more than 1,000 people on the island of Ischia, recently hit by violent landslides, have been asked to leave their homes. Evacuations were due to begin at 4pm on Friday, officials said.
People from the most affected municipality of Casamicciola, where eleven people died and one woman is still missing due to last weekend’s storms, are being accommodated in hotels or sports halls, he said. Special Commissioner Giovanni Legnini made it clear that no one will be forced to leave their homes. But he hoped the villagers would see reason.
Ischia: Precipitation could lead to landslides again
Civil defense classified the danger as yellow and not as orange or red, the two highest alert levels. However, the renewed rains could again lead to landslides in areas where large amounts of mud and water have recently flowed through residential areas. “The evacuations are a precautionary measure”, clarified Italo Giulivo, from the civil defense of the Campania region.
On Thursday, the numerous emergency services in Ischia found three of the four missing persons dead. The death toll from last weekend’s storms, which caused landslides and flooding, has risen to eleven. A woman was suspected of being under the mud masses. (dpa/mbo)
