BAFTA longlists revealed: 'Oppenheimer', 'Barbie' and 'Killers Of Flower Moon' top, while 'Napoleon', 'Ferrari' and 'The Killer' fizzle out in major categories

“Oppenheimer”, “Barbie” and “Killers Of Flower Moon”

Universal, Warner Bros., AppleTV+.

The BAFTA Film Awards have revealed this year's longlists for 24 categories. At the top are Christopher Nolan's “Oppenheimer”, Greta Gerwig's “Barbie” and Martin Scorsese's “Killers Of The Flower Moon”. Scroll down to see the full lists.

The heavyweight trio are tied with 15 longlist nominations each. All three films appear in the Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay categories: Killers and Oppenheimer in the adapted screenplay, while Barbie appears in the original screenplay. The yield of 15 longlist mentions corresponds to last year's record set by Edward Berger's war film “All Quiet in the West”.

At the top are Yorgos Lanthimos' Golden Lion winner “Poor Things” with 14 and Bradley Cooper's musical biopic “Maestro” with 12. Both films received longlist mentions in the categories of Best Picture, Best Cinematography, “Best Director” and “Best Screenplay”.

Other strong performances on the list include Emerald Fennell's controversial high-society drama “Saltburn,” which has 11 releases, and Andrew Haigh's enigmatic drama “All of Us Strangers,” which has 10 longlist mentions, including Best Picture and two mentions Supporting actors with Paul Mescal and Jamie Glocke. Jonathan Glazer's innovative Holocaust drama “The Zone of Interest” also received 10 mentions, while Celine Song's confident debut film “Past Lives” won six awards, including best picture. The strongest international performance was Justine Triet's “Anatomy of a Fall,” with seven awards including director and original screenplay. The surprise leader of the pack is Warner's marquee reboot “Wonka,” starring Timothée Chalamet, which has eight mentions.

This year's feature films all featured strong performances in the acting categories. Leonardo DiCaprio and Cillian Murphy landed the lead roles alongside Barry Keoghan for Saltburn and George MacKay, who won with the indie queer thriller Femme. German actress Sandra Hülser continued her successful year, receiving two acting nominations, one for supporting actress for “The Zone of Interest” and one for leading actress for “Anatomy of a Fall.” How to Have Sex breakout Mia McKenna-Bruce also landed the lead role, while the film's director Molly Manning Walker made the best director longlist that includes Celine Song, Cord Jefferson and Alexander Payne .

Remarkably, Michael Mann's racing biography “Ferrari” is almost completely empty in the main categories. The film received five longlist nominations, all in technical categories including cinematography and sound. Ridley Scott's “Napoleon” fared similarly, with eight awards, all in technical categories, plus an award for outstanding British film. “The Killer,” David Fincher’s latest feature film for Netflix, received a longlist nomination for adapted screenplay. Elsewhere, Ava DuVernay's ambitious time-hop drama “Origin” is not mentioned, and the buzzy fall films “Priscilla” and “May December” only appear twice. There were also no results in the “Acting” category for Wes Anderson’s star ensemble comedy “Asteroid City.”

Similar to last year's longlist, there is a positive presence of racial and gender diversity across all categories, with Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction), Colman Domingo (Rustin), Teo Yoo (Past Lives), Da'Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers) . , Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple) and Vivian Oparah (Rye Lane) all appear in the acting categories. Keen observers will be interested to see whether this is reflected in the final nomination pool, which will be announced on January 18th.

The final round of voting to determine the winners will take place between January 19th and February 13th. The BAFTA Film Awards ceremony will take place on February 18th.
