Bags of frozen fruit recalled over possible Listeria contamination

Plastic bags containing frozen fruit have been recalled because of possible Listeria contamination. The FDA announced a voluntary recall of several products such as 16 oz. Inexpensive bags of frozen fruit sold at Walmart in at least 30 states.

Whole Foods brand 365 Organic is also affected and bags of 365 Organic tropical fruit mixes, pineapple chunks, whole organic strawberries, organic sliced ​​strawberries, and organic blackberries and bananas are being recalled.

Sunrise Growers Inc., a subsidiary of SunOpta Inc., has ordered the voluntary recall of these products because fruit supplied by a third party may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause short-term nausea, diarrhea, fever, and other symptoms intended for people who have are healthy.

However, these infections can be fatal to people with weakened immune systems or to young children and the elderly. Listeria infection can also lead to miscarriage in pregnant women.

The FDA urges people concerned about listeria infection to see a doctor. As of Wednesday, no diseases caused by this possible Listeria recall have been recorded.

The recall includes bags of inexpensive fruit mix, dark sweet cherries and mango chunks sold at Walmart.

Good & Gather brand frozen fruit bags sold at Trader Joe’s are also being recalled, as are Season’s Choice tropical blend bags sold at Aldi and Best Choice pitted red tart cherries sold at AWG.

Earlier this month, the FDA announced it was expanding a recall of frozen strawberries as the agency was investigating hepatitis A infections linked to organic frozen strawberries imported from Baja California, Mexico.
