Baker Mayfield succeeds Tom Brady

Baker Mayfield will be the starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the regular season opener.

This was announced by the Florida club on Tuesday.

Mayfield competed with Kyle Trask during training camp. The latter is a young third-year veteran who acted as a replacement for Tom Brady with the “Bucs” last year.

The Buccaneers’ new starter signed a one-year, $4 million contract last season. The first-ever draft pick of 2018 spent the first four years of his career with the Cleveland Browns. Before the start of the 2022 season, he was traded to the Carolina Panthers. He had six starts for that team before being released and transferred to the Los Angeles Rams.

In 12 games last year, including 10 as a starter, Mayfield completed 60% of his attempted passes for 2,163 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was also the victim of eight interceptions.

The Buccaneers will play their first game of the 2023 regular season on September 10. On this occasion they will visit the Vikings in Minnesota.
