ST. MARTIN. Although her situation at home is not easy, Margit Wengler does not forget her charges in Unawatuna, Sri Lanka. She has been enabling rice deliveries throughout the year – and can now be found again at some Christmas markets to help with her relief project. But she would be particularly grateful for the support this year.
Seven tons of rice every eight weeks: Margit Wengler helps around 300 poor families survive. The situation in Unawatuna is dramatic, the St. Martin resident knows: “Almost nothing grows, the monsoons were stronger than ever this year and there is no work because the factories are closed and there is also a lack of tourism. Life is no longer affordable for the poorest due to uncontrollable price increases.” Many women would go to neighboring countries, but the working conditions there are very bad.
Margit Wengler therefore also wants to promote girls’ education. “Education is the future”, she is convinced, “then they will be able to support their families”. Furthermore, the focus is still on financing rice deliveries, for which a Facebook campaign will restart in December. The plan is also to build two new houses when we go to Sri Lanka for three months at the beginning of January.
Favorite cookies are in demand
Before that, Margit Wengler was present in some markets to sell spices, olive oil, knitting and biscuits to benefit the aid project. As Dietmar Wengler needs all your support in his difficult fight back to life, Margit is happy to help with the baking of the cookies this year: If you want to support her, just put a kilo of your favorite variety in a box in St. .Martin between November 19th and 22nd (Aubachweg 18).
Wengler also invites you to her appreciation evening on December 17th in St. Martin, where she will recount her heartfelt project.
