In early 2020, when several states around the world tried to stem the spread of COVID-19 by ordering containment on their territory, powerful images began to circulate.
Iconic places are presented completely empty. These surreal shots of Venice’s canals, the streets of Shanghai, or the seemingly deserted Times Square evoke feelings of uneasiness and alienation.
Kind of a visual confirmation that we’ve just stepped into an uncertain future at a tipping point. Unknowingly, we were then witnessing the perfect illustration of the concept of border spaces, also known as “liminality”.
