Balance 2022: Tourism in Vienna is recovering from the corona pandemic Vienna

Good news for the domestic tourism industry: With 13.2 million overnight stays in 2022, Vienna achieved three-quarters of the pre-pandemic level.

VIENNA. Vienna was included in the list of the most beautiful tourist destinations in 2023 by the renowned “Condé Nast Traveler”. In particular, the cultural offerings of the federal capital stand out. The International Association of Congresses and Conventions (ICCA) recently named Vienna the European congress metropolis, ahead of Lisbon and Athens.

“Vienna is back, Vienna is back in urban tourism,” said Councilor for Economic Affairs and President of Vienna Tourism Peter Hanke (SPÖ) enthusiastically at a press event on Wednesday. The reason for this is the positive balance of the tourism industry. After two years of the corona pandemic, the market has recovered significantly in 2022. The city recorded around 5.6 million arrivals last year. This corresponds to an increase of 170% compared to 2021 and 71% of the volume in the pre-corona year of 2019.

Sales like before the Corona pandemic

With 13.2 million overnight stays, three quarters of the 2019 volume was achieved and an increase of 164 percent compared to the previous year. Hanke was also satisfied with the nightly net revenue of accommodation establishments in the months of January through November. 758.9 million euros were generated. This represents 84% of the comparative value of 2019.

Sales rose sharply, particularly from October 2022, and were even above the pre-pandemic level. If we compare the turnover of accommodation and overnight stays, it can be seen that fourth quarter turnover increased more sharply than overnight stays.

Many European guests

In December alone, there were 1.5 million overnight stays in Vienna. Bed occupancy was 61.4 percent. This corresponds to an increase of 14.4% compared to December 2021. 79% of tourists who stayed in Vienna were foreigners. Germany took the lion’s share here, closely followed by the US. They are followed by countries of origin Italy, Great Britain, Spain and France.
