TRIESTE – Banksy, the great communicator. A perhaps little-studied aspect of the Bristol writer, but one that will become the leitmotif of “The Great Communicator. Banksy-Unauthorized Exhibition” that opened on November 24 at the Salone degli Incanti in Trieste. All spotlights are on the artist’s great ability to communicate, a trait that is still relevant in light of the works recently claimed in Ukraine.
The artistic route, curated by Gianni Mercurio, opens to the public tomorrow and can be visited until April 10, 2023. The installation is promoted by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and the Municipality of Trieste and organized by PromoTurismoFVG in collaboration with Madeinart and consists of five installation rooms with over sixty original works that trace Banksy’s remarkable work: from its roots and inspirations to the present day. We therefore start from the works of artists and movements that inspired the author, including Keith Haring, Andy Wharol and Blek le Rat, as well as from the posters of the French May, from which Banksy took up the minimalism, the communication of the riots and the Use of the stencil, but also the work related to the Situationists and the concept of mass communication.
Then on to a reproduction of Banksy’s study of work and an exhibition of works critical of British society. Evidence of this is an iconic Winston Churchill with a punk crest and a Devolved Parliament made of monkeys.
The “great communicator” therefore addresses topics such as protest and capitalism – including the famous “flower thrower” – as well as war and violence. He also tells them through “Napalm”: the Vietnamese girl fleeing the bombing hand in hand with two mascots of entertainment in today’s world. Banksy’s linchpin remains the human eye of denunciation.
Finally, the exhibition also dedicates an area to the writer’s most famous performances, such as the “Walled Off Hotel” in Bethlehem, located across from the wall that separates Israel and Palestine, and then a store, ironically called Wallmart, that caters to customers with the supplies the necessary materials to those who want to paint on the adjacent wall. A path, then, based entirely on his ability to communicate, using the communication channels of the time in a unique way to tell the story of art. (HAND).
