Barbados media highlight Cuba’s help against diabetes

Bridgetown, Dec 6 (Prensa Latina) Barbados media today highlighted the agreement signed between Cuba and Barbados for the use of the Cuban drug Heberprot-P to treat diabetic foot disease in the population of that country.

Headlined “Cuba will help Barbados fight diabetes epidemic,” the Barbados Today newspaper quoted Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley as saying the two nations will work together to make this project a reality in the coming months.

During the official visit of Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel to Bridgetown the day before, it was agreed to promote the use of this biotechnological product, unique in the world, in this territory in order to reduce lower limb amputation of people affected by this disease.

Barbados is in the midst of a diabetes epidemic and the use of this drug will change many people’s lives, said Mottley, quoted by this newspaper.

Barbados Today also published that the Prime Minister thanked Havana for sending a medical brigade to help the island care for Covid-19 patients.

“I don’t know where we would be a year from now if we don’t have a contractual relationship with our sister nation’s health workers because our public health system is in dire need of additional nursing support,” he said.

The newspaper also commented on the signing of another agreement between ExportBarbados and BioCubaFarma with the aim of establishing a commercial link between the two companies.

Meanwhile, Nation News highlighted the signing of the MoU, which he said will pave the way for collaboration between the two Caribbean nations in the fields of health and pharmaceuticals.

The President of Cuba is here on an official two-day visit and today attended the VIII Caricom-Cuba Summit to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between his country and Barbados, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica.
