‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’: ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon dominates US box office

Barbie was the highest-grossing film in US theaters this weekend. by raising $155 million.

Second was “Oppenheimer” with $80.5 million

Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, opened in 4,243 theaters, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie (and every other Marvel movie that year) as the biggest premiere of the year and breaking the record for the opening weekend for a film directed by a woman.

Meanwhile, “Oppenheimer” is directed by Christopher nolanopened in 3,610 theaters, making it Nolan’s most successful debut outside of the Batman films and one of the best debuts for an R-rated biopic.

It is also The first time one film has grossed more than $100 million in opening and another has grossed more than $80 million in opening on the same weekend. With a total of more than 300 million viewers, it is likely to be the fourth largest cinema weekend of all time.

The “Barbenheimer” phenomenon might have started out as a fun competition between the two films, but as many expected, both benefited in the end.

Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part I plummeted 64% in its second weekend despite good reviews and a good opening weekend. Overshadowed by “Barbenheimer” and replaced by “Oppenheimer” on IMAX, the film starring Tom Cruise grossed 19.5 million for total domestic sales of 118.8 million.

While the audiences for “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” overlapped in some cases, they were generally different. For “Barbie,” according to PostTrak, 65% of viewers were women and 40% were under 25 years old.

Both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” had good scores on Rotten Tomatoes (90% and 94%, respectively) and an “A” rating on CinemaScore. In addition, they became popular via social networks with good or bad comments, which caused a lot of publicity for both.
