The 2024 Golden Globes nominations have ushered in a new era for the embattled awards organization.

The Golden Globes nominations, announced Monday by comedian Cedric the Entertainer and actor Wilmer Valderrama, represented a monumental affair for the awards season, as the first major network awards show announced its year-end nominees for best movies and TV shows, performances, etc. announced technical works in the entertainment industry – and big titles like Barbie, Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, Past Lives, Succession, The Bear and even Taylor Swift's Eras Tour film received big nominations.

On the film side, Greta Gerwig's Barbie blockbuster swept the nominations list as well as the summer box office, topping the overall motion picture nominations after appearing in nine categories, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Director (Gerwig), Actress – Musical or Comedy ( Margot Robbie), Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling) and three nominations in the Best Original Song category for tunes by Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa and Gosling's “I'm Just Ken.”

Christopher Nolan's “Oppenheimer” fell just short of Barbie's total in the ongoing Barbenheimer battle, receiving eight nominations, followed by “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things” with seven and Celine Song's breakout drama “Past Lives” with five – including a surprise nomination for “Song in the.” Best Director category.

Still, several major contenders remained out of the running, including a shocking snub for Taraji P. Henson for The Color Purple in the Best Supporting Actress category, while the film itself was also surprisingly left out of the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy nominations list .

Among the TV nominees, Succession's final season added nine nominations to the extensive series, with cast members Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, Kieran Culkin, Matthew Macfadyen, J. Smith Cameron, Alexander Skarsgård and Alan Ruck appearing on the Globes list.

“The Bear” and “Only Murders in the Building” followed “Succession” with five nominations each, with leading actors in both projects – Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Abby Elliott, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez and Meryl Streep – all deserve recognition among actors.

HBO and Max led the TV nominations overall with 17 network nominations, followed by Netflix with 15. However, Netflix led the film nominations with placements in 13 categories, with Warner Bros. following close behind with 12 nominations.

The Golden Globes nominations are often viewed as a predictor—rather than a direct influence—of Academy tastes, and regularly coincide with each year's subsequent Oscar nominations. Last year, only one of the acting winners at the Golden Globes – Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All at Once – won the Oscars, while Everything Everywhere also won Best Picture, although it lost to The Banshees of Inisherin in the Best Picture category Musical or comedy at the Globes.

After years of upheaval at the Golden Globes, the 2024 edition also features two new competition categories: Box Office and Box Office for theatrical projects that have grossed at least $150 million worldwide (of which $100 million must come from domestic ticket sales), The ” “Best Stand-up Comedian on TV” honors TV-based stand-up comedy sets that are at least 30 minutes long. After breaking box office records for nonfiction films this year, Swift's Eras Tour film was among the first Box Office Achievement nominees, joining other big titles like Barbie, Oppenheimer, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 and more.

The changes were announced in September, months after the Golden Globes announced in June that, following its takeover by Dick Clark Productions, it would disband the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's historic journalists group, which normally oversees the selection of honorees in all motion pictures. and television categories. following years of controversy surrounding a 2021 Los Angeles Times exposé that revealed there were no Black journalists among the organization's then 87 members.

In November, it was announced that the Globes would move its network to CBS (with an accompanying livestream on Paramount+) in 2024, after decades of broadcasts on NBC, where the last ceremony took place in January 2023.

The 2024 Golden Globes will air Sunday, January 7 at 8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT on CBS and Paramount+. The full list of nominations can be found below.
