Almost a week later Jo Koy After sending networks into a frenzy with his controversial monologue at the 81st Golden Globe Awards, the comedian who hosted the gala received a response from one of the “victims” of his jokes: the director of Barbie Greta Gerwig.

As part of his opening remarks, Koy compared the films of Oppenheimer and Barbie, explaining that the former was inspired by an acclaimed book, but the latter was about “a doll with big breasts.” Additionally, Koy felt that the main plot of Barbie pointed to a problem that many actors face in the Hollywood industry today.

“Barbie's key moment is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite and flat feet, or what casting directors call 'character actress'.”

The actor's comment caused boos and several faces of disgust during the awards ceremony, as well as all sorts of reactions on social networks, and now Greta Gerwig has also expressed her opinion and declared this despite all odds Jo Koy was right.

“Well, you’re not wrong. She's the first mass-produced doll with breasts, so she was right. And you know, I think a lot of the film project is unlikely because it's about a plastic doll,” Gerwig shared in an interview with BBC Radio 4 Today.

Gerwig further reiterated that the doll was from Ruth Handler in 1959 “It has no character or story”, since its main purpose is for girls to project themselves onto. She added that Barbie has been loved and hated over the decades and has been seen as a figurehead of the feminist movement while also being seen as a character who stereotypes women. This duality is discussed in the same film and Gerwig thought it would be a perfect approach to develop a Barbie film.

“She was a villain and she was a hero, but in a way, even though it seemed so superficial, it seemed to me to be such a fruitful starting point.”

As mentioned, Jo Koy was heavily criticized for his performance as host of the Golden Globes. Just a few hours after the award ceremony, he himself admitted that it had been a complicated evening and that, contrary to what is believed, being a comedian is very difficult other than being a presenter.

I'd be lying if it didn't hurt. I had a little moment (during the monologue) where I thought, “Ah.” Being a presenter is hard work. Yes, I'm a comedian, but being a presenter is a different style. “It’s not the same style.”

Likewise, there were also Hollywood personalities who supported Koy, such as the actor Steve Martin who has gained great popularity in recent years through his work in the series Only Murders in the Building. Martin reiterated the difficult task of officiating a ceremony as big as the Golden Globes and said that thanks to his mistake, Koy already has new material for his future stand-up shows.

“Congratulations to Jo Koy who took on the most difficult feat in show business, he did it, he missed it, He was light on his feet and now has twenty minutes of new material for his stand-up“.
