Atomic Bomb: The film, directed by Cillian Murphy, 47, grossed $33 million for the third-biggest film of the year
That’s good enough to make this weekend the biggest box office hit since cinemas reopened after the pandemic lockdowns.
It’s also enough box office sales to become the fourth-biggest box office weekend of all time, behind Avengers: Endgame at $402 million in April 2019, Avengers: Infinity Wars at $314.8 million in April 2018, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens at $313.2 million in December 2015.
And it’s all done by a bubbly blonde and her himbo friend – not a superhero or space adventurer in sight.
Greta Gerwig’s 39-year-old Bubblegum Pink film is on track to gross more than $161 million in its opening weekend.
Barbie is also on track to claim the title for the greatest opening weekend of any film directed by a woman.
Captain Marvel, co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, currently holds the record for any film directed by a woman at $153 million, with which it started 2019.
Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” holds the record for all films directed exclusively by a woman, grossing $103 million in 2017.
Oppenheimer, a J. Robert Oppenheimer film about the development of the atomic bomb, is on track to gross $77 million over the three-day weekend, boosted by the film’s $33 million opening day.
Christopher Nolan’s 52-year-old biopic is his third highest-grossing opening weekend and the all-time best opening for an R-rated film, surpassing John Wick: Chapter 4 at $73.8 million.
There’s never been an opening weekend where one film has grossed more than $100 million and a second more than $50 million, as Barbie and Oppenheimer are on track.
Barbie had the highest pre-sale of any Warner Brothers film of all time at $22.3 million.
