Greta Gerwig broke the domestic box office record for a female director, and Barbie is on track to gross $155 million in North America in its opening weekend.

According to , the film topped the $103.3 million domestic premiere of Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman and the $153 million weekend premiere of Captain Marvel in 2019.

Thanks to the simultaneous release of Barbie and Oppenheimer, cinemas around the world were busier than ever over the weekend.

Anticipation for Gerwig and Christopher Nolan’s respective blockbusters was in full swing ahead of their release on Friday, July 21st.

While Oppenheimer’s critical ratings topped Barbie with a near-perfect Rotten Tomato score, the latter, which stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, topped the box office for the biopic starring Cillian Murphy.

Impressively, Barbie is now on track to rake in $155 million, while Nolan’s drama is set to gross $80.5 million in North America. Internationally, both films grossed a whopping global debut gross of $337 million (Barbie) and $174.2 million (Oppenheimer), respectively.

Meanwhile, in a new interview with The Independent, Nolan described Oppenheimer as “the greatest movie I’ve ever made.” Murphy admitted he had difficulty watching the film because his face was projected onto the screen, but acknowledged that the film was “designed to be seen with an audience.”

Barbie release delayed in Pakistan due to ‘objectionable content’

The release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has been delayed in Pakistan’s Punjab province due to “objectionable content”.

Officials said the film is under review and must be approved by provincial authorities, which censor scenes that violate the country’s social, cultural and religious values.

“There will be a full review of the film and it will be censored if deemed necessary,” Farrukh Mahmood, secretary of the Punjab Film Censor Board, told AFP.

The board did not clarify what content was “offensive” and why.

Barbie and Oppenheimer broke worldwide box office records

Warner Bros.’ Barbie and Universal’s Oppenheimer delivered massive world premieres valued at $337 million and $174.2 million, respectively.

At the international box office, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, grossed $182 million in 69 markets.

On the other hand, Christopher Nolan’s Cillian Murphy-led Oppenheimer earned a whopping $93.7 million in 78 overseas markets.

Of the result, Andrew Cripps, President of International Theatrical Distribution at Warner Bros., told Deadline, “The incredible global results we’ve seen are testament to the filmmakers’ unique vision to deliver an entertaining and immersive experience that viewers of all ages respond to in fun and powerful ways.”

Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of Distribution, Universal Pictures International added, “We couldn’t be happier for Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas, the phenomenal cast and crew, and our partners at Imax and exhibitions around the world.”
