As the first opportunity to play the Barbie doll in the Greta Gerwigdirected film, actress Amy Schumer turned down the role in 2017. She had agreed to star in the feature film a year earlier, but pulled out after a few months. He said he prefers to stay away from the project, citing “schedule inconsistencies.”
The reason she declined the invitation wasn’t really that. In an interview with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, Schumer revealed why he decided to quit the job. To avoid any kind of intrigue, the actress — known for her standup shows and the comedy series Inside Amy Schumer — made it clear right at the start of the conversation that there was no climate between her and the team.
Nonetheless, it went straight to the point. “I said I wouldn’t do it because of scheduling issues, but it was actually creative differences. But there’s a new team behind this, and the film seems very feminist and pretty cool, so I’ll check it out.”
Cohen then wanted to know if the “creative differences” she was referring to were related to the “feminist and cool” character she perceives in today’s film which, judging from her comment, wouldn’t appear in the original script. “Yes,” Schumer replied.
The actress was linked to the project when Sony was working on the film. The rights were sold to Warner, who was responsible for publishing. “Sony definitely didn’t want to make the film the way I wanted it, just the way I was interested in it.”
The original script called for Amy’s Barbie to be banned from Barbieland for not being “perfect enough”. The doll would be an “ambitious inventor” and her grand creation, according to the version the actress rejected, would be a gelatin highheeled shoe.
Schumer was sure the film would have nothing to do with her when Sony sent her a gift to celebrate the signing: a pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes. “The idea that shoes are what every woman should want, right there … I should have said right away, ‘You picked the wrong girl,'” she said.
