A basketball game between two high school teams ended badly after the referee decided to hit a coach hard in the face.
The story was reported by TMZ Sports on Friday, but the incident occurred last Saturday during a game between California teams Arlington and Oak Hills.
At some point in the second half, Oak Hills head coach Rob Alexander became angry with referee Brandon Knapper. The two men exchanged words and the officer decided to settle the argument with a solid right to the jaw.
Apparently the 26-year-old continued to hit the pilot, even though he fell to the ground after the first blow. The gesture sparked a general scuffle and the game was abandoned.
Alexander was taken to the hospital and filed a complaint against Knapper. The referee turned himself in to authorities and is now charged with assault and battery. He was jailed Sunday and released Wednesday after posting $25,000 bail.
