Matt Reeves’ The Batman had a pretty strong debut with a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, but not everyone is happy with the film. Introducing Robert Pattinson as a new incarnation of the Dark Knight, the film is set in the modern world and draws on some elements of real life to help shape the story. However, there are some moments that drew the ire of critics on Twitter, who called Batman too “awakened”. Before we move on, please be aware that there is SPOILERS AHEAD for Batman.
One particular scene in The Batman that has generated some controversy is the scene in which Batman and Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) talk about the violent murders committed by the Riddler (Paul Dano). They deal with the victims chosen by the Riddler, with Catwoman suggesting that this happened, referring to them as “white privileged asses”. Critics on Twitter criticized the film for its line of dialogue as well as the casting of certain characters.

“Politics woke up affecting #Batman, all bad characters are white people. Falcon, Penguin, Enigma, Commissioner, Chief, District Attorney. Ignorant rich white boy Bruce Wayne, corrupted politician Thomas Wayne, but all the good guys are black. Gordon, Catwoman, mayor. Good job Hollywood,” reads one tweet.
Another Twitter user wrote: “The Batman has 1 line of racist dialogue and there was no need for it, it was pathetic and WOKE UP and they used the word ‘white people running Gotham City’.” ?, and I actually saw the couple on my left make it clear that they weren’t happy.”
“Rant is coming,” begins another Twitter mini-review. “I was going to acknowledge Captain Marvel’s point of view, but on reflection, I honestly think Batman is even more awake. In EVERY fucking scene there was some hint of a ridiculous movement of workers! The mayor warned Bruce about redistributing his private assets, for example.”
Even some moviegoers who largely praised the film as a whole continued to criticize Batman for its “awake” elements. Another tweet reads: “There is too much pandering to the awakened crowd in the film, but overall the plot/dialogues were strong. I don’t think it’s actually fair to compare it to The Dark Knight because The Dark Knight is just unbeatable. in terms of acting/dialogue/plot/etc. But on its own, The Batman was definitely strong enough to start its own series (with the Joker at the end, etc.) and it probably has there will be a good run in 3-4 films. the next few years.”
Another viewer wrote: “Just got off Batman. In my opinion, the best since the 1989 film. The film noir look and detective focus of Batman was a welcome change. The cinematography was great and artistic. eye-rolling lines, but that doesn’t ruin the movie.”
